"Da Vinci In The Round" - The Last Supper in Bronze

As a sculptor, my favorite medium is working in bronze. The process I use begins with a clay sculpture, then a mold which is used to make a hollow wax casting. The wax is used to make the bronze at the foundry by the "lost wax process." This time-tested method dates back to early history, and is still the most popular process used today. Creating art that could last 10,000 years... what a legacy! I intend to do sculpture until they pry a chunk of clay out of my cold, dead hands!!

When I decided to attempt the work I wanted to do as accurate a sculpture as I could of DaVinci"s painting but as I progressed I found many things I could not duplicate.

For instance, in the painting, the seated figures and the standing figues are all about the same height. Da Vinci got by with that because the lower bodies were hidden and the feet hardly showing.

To do it in sculpture, " I would have had to make the standing figures as dwarfs. Also, His painting also shows it in a marble hall with tablecloths and china dishes. I decided to use a simple wooden table with pottery and wooden trenches as plates. Also DaVinci showed the disciples as old men. They were, in fact, young men as was Christ. Like most artists I had to follow my instincts in these matters so my sculpture is more ME than DaVinci. Although I tried to use his layout and poses, I feel that for a sculpture this is as close as I could get.
